Seeking Signs from Heaven
After my grandmother passed away during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020, I went in search of her. She had been a special person in my life, always preaching kindness and encouraging me to be my best self. I needed a sign, a validation that her soul lived on. That even though I could no longer see her, touch her, or hear her the way I once did, that she was still there. I began to silently pray, “Grandma, if you’re there, let me feel your presence. Let me know you’re OK.”
As a spiritual medium I “know” that her soul has survived the transition we call death but as her granddaughter I needed a sign of validation that she was OK. That she was still there. I was seeking a sign for comfort and hope for the future that we would one day be reunited again. That even though I cannot see her she continues to watch over me and my family from the other-side.

And so, my quest for validation began. I asked, I prayed, and days turned into weeks and still nothing. The lights in my bedroom did not flicker on and off. A magical coin did not mysteriously show up on my bedroom nightstand. There were no random feathers on my car seat, or red birds landing on my shoulder when I went outside. I began to question, to wonder if I would ever feel my grandmother’s presence. I thought to myself, “I’m a medium. I should be able to sense your presence.”
Time continued to pass but I hadn’t given up, and then on one very unexpected night, “it” happened. I had a dream of my grandmother, only it was so much more, it felt like a visit with my best friend, my loving grandmother. In the dream I had gone downstairs to the dining room, and there on the kitchen table, was a pair of camouflage green army sunglasses. I thought to myself, “That’s odd. What are these sunglasses doing on the kitchen table?"
I felt a nudge and put the glasses on. As soon as I did, there she was, plain as day, standing right in front of me in my dream. With a smile and a nod, she let me know that she was always there. And perhaps in a most comforting way reminded me that even if I cannot see her all the time with my physical eyes, her spirit, her soul is there, watching over me and my family.
I awoke from the dream, never wanting it to end. I smiled as I had felt her presence, felt her love, and her humor. When she was alive, she was aware that I have two boys, but she never knew that one of them, my youngest, Trystan is absolutely obsessed with everything army and camouflage.
The glasses were a sign to me that she knew my family, knew my children, and watched over us, always. But, in true grandma style, the glasses were also symbolic of one of my favorite memories of her as a child. No matter what challenges in life she faced, she always preached positivity and kindness. She told me quite literally that wearing “rose colored” sunglasses was indeed the best way to see the world because it made everything more beautiful.
That morning I knew I had been given a very special gift, a visit with my grandmother. And although I haven’t seen her in a dream since, I know she is always there. After our visit together I have begun to occasionally “feel” her presence now and again. Sometimes when I meditate and occasionally when she crosses my mind throughout the day, but I must admit it’s often very subtle, like a whisper in my ear letting me know she’s there.
Helen Keller said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.” And I have to agree, that when it comes to communicating with our departed loved ones, that perhaps it is something we feel from within rather than see or physically touch as we once did.
Perhaps the way we experience our loved ones is as individual as you and me. Perhaps there is no limit on the time it may take or the many ways our loved ones can say, “Hello.” Maybe, when we seek proof of heaven, we need a combination of faith, patience, and belief that the miracle of spirit communication is possible. That a subtle “Hello” felt from within may indeed be a validation of our loved one’s presence, recognized by the love we feel in our heart and soul.
